Our meditation today comes from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians and the words of Saint Hilary.  In following Christ, we will imitate his actions and Christ will fill us with his holiness - in this way we will put on Christ and become by adoption what he is by nature.  In this way, we will receive the crown and the victory.

We meditate today upon the Gospel of Matthew and the words of Saint Cyril of Alexandria which speak to us of the glory promised to us at the end of this earthly journey.  Along with our struggles comes the knowledge that all that we have given up for Christ will be returned to us one hundred fold and eternal life.

Our meditation today comes from the Gospel of Matthew and the words of Saint John Cassian.  As we continue our journey to the Feast of the Presentation we are called every day to become more conformed to Christ and that means a willingness to take up our crosses.  This does not mean only that we will be required to bear suffering.  For, by taking up our crosses we focus our eyes straight ahead on the path set forth for us by Jesus.  We strive to avoid those things which might distract us from our goal, each day becoming more like Him who became like us.

We meditate today upon the words of St. Paul to Timothy and of St. Isaac the Nineveh which speak to us of the need to constantly act as if we have only begun the way of Christ.  Now is not the time to hesitate, to say to ourselves that we have done enough.  Each day is to be a new beginning in Christ.

Our meditation today comes from the Second Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians and the words of Saint John Chrysostom.  What a great blessing it is that Jesus has come and given us the power to be like him.  He came to us in our weakness and has blessed us with grace beyond all imagining.  He has set before us the reward of everlasting life and gives us the ability to attain that reward if we but turn to him and to follow the way he has put forward.

January 18 - Feast of Our Holy Fathers Saints Athanasius and Cyril, Archbishops of Alexandria

Hierarchs Athanasius and Cyril, you spread the Orthodox faith and crushed all heresy, becoming triumphant trophy-bearers.  You strengthened all things with devotion and greatly adorned the Church.  You were worthy to find Christ our God who grants great mercy to all. – Troparion of the Feast of Athanasius and Cyril

We celebrate the Feast of Sts Athanasius and Cyril in the Eastern Church with meditations upon Matthew and words from Saint Athanasius which speak to us of remaining faithful to the teaching of Christ as it has been passed down through the Apostles and holy men and women throughout history.  These two saints also show us the importance of boldly proclaiming the great truth that in Jesus Christ, God has become human and we have been saved.

Archbishops, renowned for your faith and devotion, courageous defenders of the Church of Christ, protect all those who pray to you, “Compassionate Ones, through your prayers, save those who greatly honor you!” – Kontakion for the Feast of Athanasius and Cyril

We continue our meditations encouraging us to follow the way of Christ with the First Letter of Peter and the words of Saint John Damascene which proclaim the truth that for us to be united with Christ we must be willing to follow his example.  We have been saved through Christ's incarnation and we are also saved through Christ's life, his passion, and his resurrection.

Today we really begin focusing on the upcoming Feast of the Presentation with a meditation upon the Gospel of Luke and the words of Saint Irenaeus.  We also hear the special Eastern Prayer of preparation for the Feast of the Presentation.  Preparation entails both following Jesus' example obedience and his example of love.  This time of preparation is also a time for conversion so that we might present ourselves along with Jesus before God on that special day.
